The Beginning Step: Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is often the first step in periodontal treatment. Known as scaling and root planing, this deep cleaning removes mouth’s plaque. During the scaling process, your dentist will basically scrape away tartar from the gum line. Afterward, root planing will remove rough areas where germs will gather. This will help remove bacteria and cease them from contributing to the gum disease. There are also laser removal procedures that can remove plaque and tartar.

The Next Steps: Surgical Periodontal Treatments

• Gum Graft Surgery: If you have exposed teeth roots because of gum recession, gum graft surgery may be a great option. In order to create gum grafts, a dentist will take gum tissue from your palate. These grafts are then used to cover exposed roots.
• Regenerative Procedures: If periodontal disease has damaged the bone that supports your teeth, a regenerative procedure may be recommended. By removing bacteria, your body will naturally begin regenerating bone and tissue. Thus, your teeth and gums will be healthy.
